Robinson Nature Center
The kindergarten students were able to take a field trip on April 26, 2019. Deep Run Elementary School was able to obtain a grant from the Friends of the Robinson Nature Center field trip sponsorship. We were able to take 5 kindergarten classes, teachers and chaperones. The James & Anne Robinson Nature Center is a green-designed nature education center situated on 18 acres of forested land. Operated by Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, the nature center features interactive exhibits, a children’s discovery room, the Nature Place outdoor play area, an auditorium, classrooms/ meeting rooms and the NatureSphere, a stateof-the-art digital planetarium. A model of green building practices, the center includes a geothermal heating and cooling system, solar panels, a porous concrete parking lot and many more sustainability and efficiency features. A mile of nature trails allows visitors views of the Middle Patuxent River and the Simpson Mill ruins. |
STEM PROJECTThe kindergarten students did a unit on the Gingerbread Man, the Gingerbread Girl, and many other books about the Gingerbread characters running away. The students brought in recyclables from home. They planned and created a Gingerbread trap to catch the character. This STEM activity allowed the students to work together using the Engineering and Scientific method. It was also tremendous fun!
The kindergarten students had so much fun making the Gingerbread traps that we decided before March 17, we would again have another fun STEM activity. The students designed a trap to catch the leprechaun. The students all worked together using cardboard boxes, tape, toilet paper rolls, cans and many other items from the home recycle bin. The students did a great job. |
